Pakistan's ruling coalition has announced its intention to impeach
President Pervez Musharraf.
Speaking at a news conference, the
leader of the Pakistan People's Party, Asif Ali Zardari, said the
coalition would table an impeachment motion in parliament on
Monday. The consensus came after three days of talks between the
People's Party and its coalition partners, the Pakistan Muslim
Leaque-Nawaz. The government needs a two-thirds combined majority
in the upper and lower houses of parliament to oust Musharraf. The
Pakistani president has cancelled plans to travel to Beijing for
the opening ceremonies of the Olympic Games. The foreign ministry
says Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani is to attend the ceremonies
in his place.
