08.08.2008 - Protests elsewhere as games open

As China launched the Beijing Olympics thousands of people
elsewhere in Asia and in Europe took part in human rights protests
on issues ranging from China's crackdown early this year in Tibet
to its support for Burma's military junta.

In New Delhi Tibetan
exiles scuffled with police. In Nepal's capital Kathmandu police
detained hundreds of Tibetan refugees who tried to storm a Chinese
consular office. In Paris several hundred activists rallied outside
the Chinese embassy carrying a banner depicting the Olympic rings
as handcuffs. In Brussels, 200 people, mainly Tibetan exiles,
protested near EU headquarters. Protests also took place outside
the Chinese embassies in Berlin and London. In Hong Kong a climber
unfurled banners from the city's largest bridge that read "freedom
from oppression". The French-based media rights group Reporters
Without Borders says it hacked into Chinese airwaves in Beijing 12
hours before the opening and broadcast a short programme in
Chinese, English and French.
