The veteran goalkeeper of Germany's soccer team Jens Lehmann has
announced his withdrawal from the national team.
Lehmann, who
recently switched clubs, from Arsenal to Stuttgart, said he had
decided to clear the way for a younger goalkeeper to represent
Germany at the World Cup in South Africa in 2010. Commentators say
two likely prospects are Rene Adler who plays for Leverkusen and
Robert Enke of Hannover. German coach Joachim Low praised Lehmann,
aged 38, for what he called his big contribution to Germany's
runner-up success at the recent European Championships won by
Spain.
