Austria's Social Democrats have elected Werner Faymann as their new
party chief replacing Alfred Gusenbauer.
The 48-year-old Faymann,
who is currently the country's infrastructure minister, became
acting party head in June. He will also be the party's top
candidate for chancellorship in early parliamentary elections in
September. The governing coalition between the centre-left Social
Democrats and the conservative People's Party collapsed in July
after months of acrimony. Gusenbauer, who is currently chancellor,
had held the party chairmanship since April 2000.
