The UN Security Council is due shortly to hold another emergency
session in New York on the heavy fighting in South Ossetia.
Russian
tanks and troops entered Georgia's breakaway region on Friday after
forces of Georgia's pro-Western government tried to capture
Tskhinvali, South Ossetia's main city. Its residents include many
Russian passport holders. The International Red Cross says the
city's hospitals are overflowing with casualties. According to the
news agency Interfax, Russia's military claims that 10 of its
peacekeeping troops in Tskhinvali were killed by Georgian shelling.
The government of Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili claims to
have shot down five Russian aircraft. That's been denied by Russia.
At the Beijing Olympics Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin says
he's had talks on the crisis with US President George W. Bush. The
US State Department says it's sending an envoy to the affected
Caucausus region. NATO and the EU have called for an end to
hostilities. The Finnish chairman of the Organisation for Security
and Cooperation in Europe, Alexander Stubb, says he fears a
"full-fledged war" over South Ossetia.
