Coinciding with the launch of the Beijing Olympics, thousands of
people around the world have protested against China's human rights
policies.
Demonstrations focused on issues ranging from China's
crackdown early this year in Tibet to its support for Burma's
military junta. Tibetan exiles scuffled with police in New Delhi,
India, and police in Nepal's capital Kathmandu detained
hundreds of Tibetan refugees who tried to storm a Chinese consular
office. In Paris, several hundred activists rallied outside the
Chinese embassy carrying a banner depicting the Olympic rings as
handcuffs. Protests also took place outside the Chinese embassies
in Berlin and London.
