The summer Olympic Games in Beijing have their first gold medal
winner.
The Czech Republic's Katerina Emmons took gold in the
women's air rifle shooting event. This comes a day after the
opening ceremonies, which were held amid tight security and
political controversy, with billions of people watching on
television worldwide. The team from Greece, the homeland of the
ancient Olympic Games, led the parade of athletes from 204 nations
and Chinese President Hu Jintao declared the Games open in the
presence of 80 foreign dignitaries.
