Russian Foreign
Minister Sergei Lavrov and local officials have said that around
1,500 people have been killed in the fighting, which began on
Friday as Georgian troops sought to take control of the regional
capital, Tskhinvali. Russia, which has had peacekeepers in South
Ossetia, responded by sending in amoured convoys. There are also
reports that Russian fighter jets have been bombarding targets in
other parts of Georgia. Georgian officials have said that the port
city of Poti has been completely destroyed and that three military
bases have also been targeted. A senior military officer in Tbilisi
