Русская версияThe summer Olympic Games in Beijing are underway with a full
schedule of events, a day after the opening ceremony held in front
of more than 90,000 spectators in the Chinese capital's "bird nest"
stadium.
Chinese President Hu Jintao declared the Games officially
open and Greek athletes led the parade of more than 200 nations
into the stadium. NBA basketball superstar Dirk Nowitzki had the
honour of carrying the German flag in that parade. The first gold
medal has gone to the Czech Republic, with Katharina Emmons winning
the women's air rifle event.
