Muslim rebels in the Philippines have reportedly begun withdrawing
from positions in the south of the country after days of heavy
fighting.
Security forces said Moro Islamic Liberation Front rebels
had begun pulling out from villages and towns in North Cotabato
province on the southern island of Mindanao on Tuesday. The United
Nations has begun airlifting food to the region to avert a
humanitarian crisis. Officials said 43 evacuation centres have been
set up for some 160,000 refugees who have fled their homes.
Fighting erupted last week after the Supreme Court ordered the
government to suspend plans to establish an extended Muslim
homeland in the southern Philippines.
