After meeting at the Kremlin on Tuesday, the presidents of France
and Russia have announced the results of their discussions on the
crisis in Georgia.
While Russian President Dmitry Medvedev declared
that Moscow's troops will be withdrawn from South Ossetia, he added
that international negotiations will first be needed to assure
peace in the Caucasus. In his role as European Union president,
Nicolas Sarkozy presented an initiative calling for an immediate
truce, respect for Georgia's territorial integrity and a return to
the pre-conflict status quo. Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili
claims that Russian attacks on his country are continuing, a charge
the Kremlin calls a provocation. Speaking in Brussels, NATO
Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer confirmed that Georgia
remains on track to become a full member of the western alliance,
despite worries that Tbilisi's conflict with Moscow could rekindle
East-West tensions.
