After meeting at the Kremlin on Tuesday, the presidents of France
and Russia announced the results of their discussions on the crisis
in Georgia.
While Russian President Dmitry Medvedev declared that
international negotiations will be needed to assure peace in the
Caucasus, EU president Nicolas Sarkozy called for a return to the
pre-conflict status quo. In the meantime, the French President has
arrived in Tbilisi to continue his peace talks with the Georgian
President Mikhail Saakashvili. US Secretary of State Condoleezza
Rice said earlier in Washington that the US reaffirms its clear
support for Georgia's sovereignty. At the same time, in Brussels,
NATO renewed its pledge to accept Georgia as a full member of the
western alliance, despite the fighting with Russia over the
breakaway region of South Ossetia.
