Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has rejected an Israeli
proposal for a peace agreement in which Israel offered to withdraw
from 93 percent of the West Bank.
Calling the offer unacceptable,
Abbas' government countered that Palestinians want a geographically
continuous state corresponding with the 1967 borders and with
Jerusalem as its capital. Israel's Haaretz newspaper had reported
earlier that Prime Minister Ehud Olmert had offered the
Palestinians land in the southern Israeli Negev desert as
compensation for the territory that Israel wants to annex.
