13.08.2008 - Divorce rate in Czech Republic second highest in EU - stats

The divorce rate has not considerably changed in the Czech Republic in the past few years.
In most of the 27 EU member states the number of divorces increased in the monitored 10-year period from 1995 to 2005, according to Eurostat.
Two married couples per 1000 inhabitants divorced on average in the EU, while in the Czech Republic it was 3.1 divorces per 1000 inhabitants in 2005.
The highest number of divorces was registered in the Czech Republic in 1996 and 2004 (3.3 per 1000 inhabitants).
The worse situation is only in Lithuania with 3.3 divorces per 1000 inhabitants in 2005.
On the contrary, the lowest divorce rate is in Malta, Italy, Ireland and Spain, though the situation has worsened even in these countries.
Slovakia is on the EU average in the number of marriages and divorces.
However, the divorce legislation is also considerably different in various EU countries.

It is much more difficult to seek a divorce in Ireland than in Sweden, for instance, with very liberal divorce rules or in Malta where divorce is virtually impossible.
While the divorce rate has been rising in the EU, the number of new marriages has been decreasing.
The number of new marriages in the 27 EU countries dropped by 200,000 on average between 1995 and 2005.
The average rate was 4.9 marriages per 1000 inhabitants in 2005. In the Czech Republic five marriages per 1000 inhabitants were reported.
However, the number of Czech couples who get married has been rising in the country since then. Last year 5.5 marriages per 1000 people were reported.
The marriage rate is higher in the neighbouring Slovakia and Poland and lower in the neighbouring Austria.
People's approach to marriage and divorce is influenced by many aspects, such as liberal education, the position of the church in society as well as the economic and political situation in the country.
