Officials in Georgia say Russian troops have begun pulling out of
the town of Gori, some 70 kilometres from the capital, Tbilisi.
Georgian police and special forces were to assume control as
Russian forces withdraw.
Meanwhile, the first American military
aircraft carrying humanitarian supplies from the United States have
arrived in Tbilisi. US President George W. Bush has told the
Kremlin it must fully withdraw from Georgia or risk harming
international ties. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov
responded by warning that Washington would have to choose between
Russia and the current Georgian government. For its part, the
European Union is considering sending observers to the region to
monitor a proposed ceasefire.
