Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is set to meet his Turkish
counterpart Abdullah Gul in Istanbul.
This marks Ahmadinejad's
first visit to Turkey since the Iranian leader came to power in
2005. Thursday's visit is expected to focus on bilateral relations
and Iran's nuclear programme. Turkey's foreign minister Ali Babacan
has offered to try and mediate in the deadlocked nuclear dispute
between Iran and the West. In June, the five permanent members of
the UN Security Council plus Germany offered a new package of
incentives to Iran for it to stop its nuclear enrichment. Turkey
has repeatedly said it is not opposed to Iran's controversial
nuclear programme as long as it is for civil use.
