Speaking to reporters at
the Pentagon, Defence Secretary Robert Gates also said that Moscow
could face consequences for the Russian army's actions in Georgia
during the recent conflict over that country's breakaway region of
South Ossetia. Both sides have agreed to a French-brokered
ceasefire. Russian troops remain in Georgia but the Pentagon said
it appeared they were withdrawing toward South Ossetia and
Abkhazia, another pro-Russian breakaway region. Earlier, Russian
Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov ramped up diplomatic tensions by
telling reporters at the Kremlin that the world could forget about
any talk of maintaining Georgia's territorial integrity. And
following talks with President Dmitry Medvedev in Moscow, the
leaders of Abkhazia and South Ossetia said they felt confident that
they would achieve independence from Georgia.
