Русская версияGerman Chancellor Angela Merkel has used a press conference with
Russian President Dimitry Medvedev to criticise Moscow over its
handling of the conflict in the Georgian break-away region of South
Ossetia.
Following their talks in the Black Sea resort of Sochi,
Merkel said some of Russia's actions in Georgia had been excessive
and that the presence of Russian soldiers in the country was not a
good idea. She called for Russian troops to be withdrawn from
Georgia proper and for a six-point peace plan to be implemented
without delay. The chancellor added that Georgia's territorial
integrity must be the point of departure for any long-term plan on
bringing peace to the region. Medvedev said that it was highly
unlikely that South Ossetia or another break-away region, Abkhazia,
would ever be integrated back into Georgia again.
