Fernando Lugo has been sworn in as president of Paraguay, ending
six decades of rule by the conservative Colorado Party.
Tens of
thousands of Paraguayans cheered as the former Roman Catholic
bishop took the oath of office during a ceremony in the capital,
Asuncion. Speaking in both Spanish and the Guarani indigenous
language, Lugo pledged to tackle corruption and combat poverty.
Those are the promises that helped the left-of-centre politician to
win the presidential election, which was held back in April.
