Following the lead of Poland, which signed a preliminary agreement
to let the United States deploy 10 interceptor missiles along the
Baltic coast, Ukraine has said it is now also prepared to open its
missile defense network to cooperation with European and other
foreign powers.
Ukraine's foreign ministry said that the withdrawal
by Russia from a bilateral defense agreement earlier this year
allows Kiev to establish active ties with other countries. Russia
has reacted with anger to the US-Polish missile shield deal. Deputy
chief of staff, General Anatoly Nogovistyn, said the plans for a
missile base in Poland could not go "unpunished". Washington says
the system is intended to protect itself and Europe against missile
attacks from "rogue states".
