Despite a French-brokered ceasefire in the Caucasus, Russian troops
are digging in close to the Georgian capital, Tbilisi.

Although
fighting has halted, Russian forces show no sign of pulling out
more than a week after invading Georgia. According to eyewitnesses
in the western Georgian town of Poti, Russian troops have also
carried off equipment from the town's port and airport. Russia,
however, has denied reports that it has blown up a key railroad
bridge west of the capital. The United States and Germany have
called Russia's invasion "an excessive use of force" and have
demanded the immediate withdrawal of Russian forces from Georgian
territory.
