The Israeli cabinet has voted to release some 200 Palestinian
prisoners in a goodwill gesture to President Mahmoud Abbas.
The
move is seen as a bid to kick-start faltering US-backed peace talks
ahead of an upcoming visit to the region by US Secretary of State
Condoleezza Rice. There are currently more than 11,000 Palestinians
jailed in Israel. Final approval of the list of prisoners to be
released will be made on Monday by a ministerial committee.
