German Chancellor Angela Merkel has called for the urgent
withdrawal of Russian forces from Georgia, at a press conference in
Tbilisi.
Merkel met Georgian leader Mikheil Saakashvili for talks
amid further diplomatic efforts to end the crisis in the Caucasus.
Saakashvili said Georgia would not give up the breakaway regions of
South Ossetia and Abkhazia. He also called for independent monitors
to verify the withdrawal of Russian forces from his country, in
accordance with a recent European Union brokered ceasefire.
Earlier, Russian President Dmitri Medvedev said his country's
forces would begin withdrawing on Monday. The conflict began over a
week ago when Georgia launched an offensive to retake the de-facto
independent region of South Ossetia, and Moscow intervened to back
the separatists.
