Afghanistan has mobilised 7,000 police officers in the capital
Kabul, amid a wave of violence ahead of Monday's Independence Day
celebrations.
At least 60 people have been reported killed in a
series of clashes across the country's south. In once incident, a
battle raged for several hours when militants ambushed a convoy
near the town of Qalat in Zabul province. Government officials said
five private security guards and 28 Taliban militants were killed
in the clash. Also in the south, officials in Kandahar province say
a roadside bomb hit a police jeep late on Saturday, killing 10
officers in one of the deadliest recent attacks against security
forces.
