Iran says it has sent its first satellite into space using a
domestically built rocket.
The Safir, or Ambassador, satellite was
tested in anticipation of sending up another satellite at a later
date which is to gather atmospheric data. Iran has a long-standing
goal of developing a space program, but the satellite test is
likely to provoke concern among certain western capitals. The
ballistics technology necessary for launching objects into space
can also be used for launching weapons. Western countries accuse
Iran of trying to develop nuclear weapons under the guise of a
civilian nuclear programme, a charge Tehran denies.
