German Chancellor Angela Merkel has called for the speedy
withdrawal of Russian forces from Georgia.
The German leader met
Georgian president, Mikheil Saakashvili, for talks amid ongoing
diplomatic efforts to end the crisis in the Caucasus. At their
joint press conference in Tbilisi, Merkel repeated her support for
Georgia's eventual entry into NATO, something Russia strongly
opposes. Earlier on Sunday, Russian President Dmitri Medvedev said
his country's forces would begin returning to their bases on
Monday. The conflict began over a week ago when Georgia launched an
offensive to retake the de-facto independent region of South
Ossetia, and Moscow intervened on the side of the separatists.
