German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier has begun a two-day
visit to Sweden and Norway to discuss the crisis in the Caucasus.
The German foreign ministry said Steinmeier's meetings would focus
on finding ways for the international community to foster long-term
peace in Georgia.
Sweden's Foreign Minister Carl Bildt has been one
of the harshest critics of Russia's military intervention in the
Georgian conflict. In contrast, however, Steinmeier warned against
any "knee jerk" reactions towards Russia, in an interview ahead of
his visit. According to the weekly Welt am Sonntag newspaper,
Steinmeier said he was against abandoning discussions with Russia
over closer ties with the EU or entry into the World Trade
Organisation.
