Afghanistan has mobilised 7,000 police officers in the capital
Kabul ahead of Monday's Independence Day celebrations after a wave
of violence killed at least 60 people in a series of clashes across
the country's south.
In the worst incident government officials
said five private security guards and 28 Taliban militants were
killed near the town of Qalat in Zabul province in a battle that
lasted several hours. In Kandahar province a roadside bomb hit a
police jeep killing 10 officers. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Defence
in London said that British NATO troops have been involved in the
deaths of four Afghan civilians in southern Afghanistan, adding it
has opened an inquiry into the incident.
