a series of attacks, leaving at least 16 civilians dead.
There were
reports of heavy fighting between government forces and rebels from
the Moro Islamic Liberation Front. Witnesses in one village said
numerous bodies were hacked to death in the assault. A Philippine
general called the coordinated attacks in several towns and
villages a virtual declaration of war.
