Western countries are pushing Russia to fulfil a promise to
withdraw its troops from Georgia.
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev
announced on Sunday that Russian withdrawals would begin at midday
Monday but soldiers are reported to still be in holding position a
half hour's drive north of the Georgian capital, Tbilisi. Western
allies of Georgian president, Mikheil Saakashvili, increased the
pressure on Russia to act and showed their support for Georgia.
French President Nicolas Sarkozy wrote in Monday's edition of Le
Figaro that Moscow withdraw without delay. US Secretary of State
Condoleezza Rice sharply criticised Moscow, saying Russia's
international reputation was in tatters. German Chancellor Angela
Merkel, meanwhile, assured Saakashvili on Sunday that NATO would
still give the ex-Soviet republic membership.
