At the Beijing Olympics, China's brightest hope for an athletics
gold medal had to pull out, dashing the expectations of some 90,000
spectators at the Bird's Nest stadium.
The coach of 110-metre
hurdler Liu Xiang said the world record holder had a foot injury
and couldn't start his preliminary heat. The first gold medal of
the day went to Australian triathlete, Emma Snowsill.
