Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf has has announced his
resignation during a televised address to the nation.
There had
mounting pressure at home and abroad for Musharraf to resign.
During his speech the former military ruler listed his
accomplishments during his nine years in office and defended his
policies. Musharraf was re-elected last year in what he called
"fair and tranparent" elections. Musharraf has other options
available, including his powers as president to dissolve parliament
and even to declare a state of emergency. On Sunday, the ruling
coalition, headed by the party of slain former premier Benazir
Bhutto, said it had drawn up impeachment charges against Musharraf,
who seized power in 1999 in a bloodless coup.
