Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf has announced his resignation,
amid an impending impeachment motion by the two ruling coalition
parties.
In an emotional televised address, Musharraf defended his
nine-year tenure in office and called the impeachment charges
against him false. He added that he was quitting for the sake of
maintaining stability in the country. Musharraf seized power in a
1999 coup but has been isolated since his allies lost parliamentary
elections in February.
