The United States and Poland have signed a deal that will see part
of an American anti-missile shield based on Polish soil.
US
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Polish counterpart Radoslaw
Sikorski signed the agreement in a ceremony in the Polish capital,
Warsaw. Washington says the defence system is meant to counter the
threat of what it describes as rogue states acquiring ballistic
missiles. Russia says the system threatens its own nuclear
deterrent. Following the signing ceremony, Rice dismissed the
Russian concerns. Negotiations over installing the shield in Poland
wrapped up last week against the backdrop of heightened tensions
between the West and Moscow over the conflict in Georgia.
