The Philippine government has announced that it was scrapping a
peace deal with the country's biggest Muslim rebel group after days
of fighting this week.
A government spokeswoman called the decision
a painful step but that President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo would
seek a new agreement. The peace deal would have expanded an
existing Muslim autonomous zone. Christian groups opposed the deal
as unconstitutional. When the Supreme Court halted its
implementation, rebels from the Moro Islamic Liberation Front
launched the attack that left about 40 people dead.
