Russia's military says it is withdrawing from Georgia in a punctual
fashion, in line with its promise to leave the country by Friday.
Deputy Chief of the General Staff, Anatoly Nogovitsyn, added that
Russia would maintain 500 troops in a so called "area of
responsibility", which includes Georgia's separatist regions and a
buffer-zone around them.
This comes amid fresh criticism of the
pace of the withdrawal. The United States' top commander in Europe,
General John Craddock, said Russia's army was moving at what he
called a "snail's pace". German Defence Minister Franz Joseph Jung
told domestic public television that he was informed the Russian
withdrawal would be complete by midnight on Friday.
