Provincial elections are underway in Sri Lanka, as government
forces push deeper into territory held by Tamil Tiger rebels in the
island's north.
More than 25,000 police have been deployed to guard
polling booths in two out of the nine provinces on the island,
where voters are turning out to elect the highest level of local
government in the regions. Participation has been high, despite a
campaign marred by shootings, arson and intimidation. The provinces
going to the polls are not directly affected by fighting between
troops and Tamil separatists, but analysts say the government has
turned the vote into a referendum on its military strategy against
the rebels.
