German pair Christian Gille and Thomasz Wylenzek have paddled their
way to a bronze medal in the men's 500-meter canoe double, in a
photo-finish with second-placed Russians Sergey Ulegin and
Alexander Kostoglod.
Wylenzek competed a day after being treated in
hospital for dehydration. Meng Guanliang and Yang Wenjun of China
took the gold medal, successfully defending their Olympic triumph
in Athens. The result was disappointing for Germany, who have
dominated the sport since the early 1990s. Earlier on Saturday
Sabine Spitz secured a gold for Germany in the womens' mountain
bike racing.
