The widower of Pakistan's assassinated former Prime Minister
Benazir Bhutto has accepted his party's invitation to stand for
President.
Asif Ali Zardari will contest the post for the Pakistan
People's Party on September 6. He was nominated by the PPP on
Friday, but said he needed a day to consider the offer. Meanwhile,
the leader of the junior party in the governing coalition has
demanded key concessions in return for backing Zardari. Nawaz
Sharif wants his partners to agree to slash the powers of the
Presidency and reinstate all judges sacked last year by former
President Pervez Musharraf. The office of the President was made
vacant last Monday, when Musharraf bowed to pressure to stand down
after nine years in power.
