made his first joint appearance with his choice of vice
presidential running mate, Senator Joe Biden.
Thousands of Democrat
supporters turned out in Springfield, Illinois, to cheer on their
Presidential ticket. Obama praised the Delaware senator and said
together the two would take the country in a new direction. In his
pitch, Biden pointed to difficulties in the American economy,
saying the country needed a change in direction. Observers say
Obama's choice of Biden, one of Washington's most senior senators,
makes up for a perceived deficit in experience.
