US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will travel to the Middle
East on Sunday in a bid to promote peace talks between Israeli and
Palestinian officials.
The peace process has made little visible
progress since its formal relaunch last November during the
Annapolis conference in the United States. Both sides remain deeply
divided on core issues like the status of Jerusalem, the fate of
Palestinian refugees, and final borders. Rice has already visited
the region 17 times in the past two years. During her last trip to
Israel in June, Rice strongly criticised the expansion of Jewish
settlements in the occupied West Bank, saying they undermined the
peace process.
